Fighting for positions
Usually the alpha position is the only position fought over. Though the beta is second in command, it isn't much fought after.
Betas will continuously attempt to climb to the alpha position, depending on the determination of the wolf, though sometimes it will never occur. It is a fight for submission over anything, and once in submission, the winner is declared. Heavy injury, however, also determines the winner, though this rarely ever happens, because those that attempt to cause heavy injury purposely are generally killed or exiled from the pack.
If the alpha loses, then he is thrown to the bottom of the pack ranks. He does nothing more than tend to pups, if that happens.
Omegas (and your occasional overthrown alpha) do not fight, or hunt. Omegas do not fight and other wolves do not fight you. Omegas are not worth fighting, however pack members do not look kindly on him. Despite the position, being an Omega still guarantees protection from stray wolves and predators. This is why they stay within a pack, regardless of their reputation.
While the alpha is usually the only one to mate, betas will sometimes form their own family groups with another wolf.
Fighting For Food
The order of eating, as well as the food proportion goes down by ranks (alpha, beta, etc.). If the alpha female is pregnant, then she will almost always eat first. While it is still not clearly identified as to which ranks are in between beta and omega, the pack member to most sufficiently kill the prey will usually get first dibs over other "regular" members.
Omegas will get sometimes scraps, or get nothing; they sometimes hunt small game on their own just to survive.
Other reasons
Other reasons fights are started are related to the character's history and/or personality.
